About Dog Training Classes at CVHS

The goal of our training program is to teach you how to teach your dog good manners. You’ll learn what motivates your dog, what distracts him or her, and how you can get his or her attention. The more your dog is tuned into you and you into your dog, the more fun you’ll have together. Our classes are not geared for obedience competition but rather to promote a strong, healthy relationship between you and your dog.

CVHS Training Classes: CVHS offers a variety of dog training classes to meet the needs of our community.  Most of our classes meet for one hour a week for six consecutive weeks.  If you do not see a class that currently fits your schedule and would like to be considered when we are scheduling future classes, please let us know by completing a registration form.  You do not need to include payment at this time but please understand that your registration for future classes is not complete until payment has been received.

Positive Reinforcement Training: All CVHS training classes are based on positive reinforcement training methods; choke chains, prong collars, and electronic collars are not allowed.  Required materials for classes will be discussed during the first session and may include treats, flat (non-retractable) leashes and collars, and other helpful training tools.

Family Participation: Members of your family age 6 and older are welcome to participate, however all children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult and may not outnumber adults by more than two to one.  All participants must follow safety guidelines as specified by the instructor or they may be removed from class with no refund of fees.

Class Location: Unless otherwise indicated, classes are held at Central Vermont Humane Society’s Training Center at 1589 VT Route 14S, East Montpelier.  Please park in our lot and walk around the right side of the building to the Training Center entrance.  Please do not bring your dog into the Adoption Center.  Note: As classes are generally held when the CVHS Adoption Center is closed, no restrooms are available for training class participants.

First Class: Unless otherwise noted, please do not bring your dog to the first class.  It is an orientation and training class for humans only.

Payment: Your registration is not complete until payment has been received.  Optional and helpful training supplies are available for purchase by check or exact change during class.

Fees:
Reactive Dog Class: $175

6-Week Courses: $125*
Puppy Classes: $125 (unless otherwise noted)
1-Hour Specialty Workshops: $35 each or $100 for all 3
