Central Vermont Humane Society

December 9, 2010

Central Vermont Humane Society has received permanent custody of 16 of the 17 animals seized from an East Montpelier home in the past weeks.  Early this morning the owner of 11 of the dogs agreed to relinquish ownership to the Humane Society if the Humane Society would agree to not seek restitution for the care of the animals from the owner.  The Humane Society has already spent over $10,000 on the care of these animals.  The owner of the 5 cats also agreed to relinquish custody to CVHS.

“This was an easy decision for CVHS,” says Anne Ward, Director of Operations at the Humane Society.  “Our priority is the animals.”  Initial horror at their condition was replaced by hope as the animals gained weight and responded to emergency medical care.  “It was touch and go for the first few days with a few of them,” reports Ward.  “Everyone pulled through and we are so relieved to be able to perform the final surgeries to relieve pain.”  9 of the animals are in surgery today, at hospitals around Central Vermont.

The goal is to have homes by the holidays for all 16.  Interested adopters should contact CVHS for more information.

“Now more than ever we need financial support for their care,” adds Ward.  “We are grateful for everything our community does to help these and other animals.”

The last dog is owned by a separate party.  Efforts are being made to reach an agreement with the owner in order for CVHS to provide medical care for the dog.  If an agreement is not reached, the State will file an additional forfeiture hearing.

Donations may be made online, with a credit card at the Adoption Center or by calling 476-3811, or by mailing a check marked “Special Needs” to CVHS: PO Box 687, Montpelier, VT 05601.
